Let's Talk About Detox

“The doctor of the future will give no medicine but will interest his patients in the core of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease”

The underlying cause for all diseases is malnutrition, toxic accumulation and excess stress. The real causes of disease, and consequently the solution , involves diet, detoxification, and stress reduction.

So What Is A Detox?

The Dictionary Definition : Process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids the body of toxic or unhealthy substances:

Detoxification : Abstain from or rid the body of toxic or unhealthy substances.

Most of us tend to agree that detoxification or ‘detox’ diets are short-term interventions designed to eliminate toxins from the body, promote health and assist with weight loss. But in essence, it is really just creating the perfect conditions to support our body in doing the job it was already made to do “Detox”.

When our bodies become dangerously overloaded with toxins, our immune systems weaken and we become vulnerable to infectious organisms. When we become sick, our body is telling us to rest so it can focus its healing and energies on housecleaning (detoxification). Symptoms of sickness – runny nose, fever, diarrhea, sneezing, coughing, loss of appetite etc, are all processes of cleansing.

The body was designed to heal itself. You get a cut and there is nothing you can do to heal it. You might put something on to keep out the infection, but that is all you can do. The body does the healing. We all have cancer cells in our body and when the body is healthy it can detect cancer cells and kill the cancer cells. However when we are highly toxic the body has no ammunition to protect itself.

By practicing preventative medicine; eating healthy and cleansing out toxins, will give the body the strength it needs to fight most infections without resorting to drugs.

Out of the many toxins we are exposed to on a daily basis that we have little to no control over, such as environmental toxins in the air we breathe, toxins that come from the food and beverages we consume are largely controllable. Many health experts agree that toxic load (the amount of toxins our body is able to handle) is responsible for a considerable amount of diseases in modern day society. Buying organic produce (fruits and vegetables), along with organic and grass-fed meat and wild fish, seriously decreases the amount of toxins you take in on a day-to-day basis.

And it doesn’t stop at food. Personal hygiene and home care products are often laden with toxic chemicals that can be harmful to our health. Try to buy Paraben free products, pricier than the standard products but in the long run it is worth it. Health is indeed wealth.

So, Why Should You Detox ?

Our body is constantly working to dispel toxins and unwanted matter from its various systems. Over time, the body gets run down from unhealthy food choices, alcohol, caffeine, drugs, stress and environmental toxins that are a part of modern day life. No matter how healthy your diet or lifestyle may be, external factors still require us to give the body a chance to recharge and dispel anything that may be holding us back from experiencing superior health and long lasting vitality. When our vital organs are placed under too much pressure and unable to work efficiently, this is when illness and disease can appear. Taking time to cleanse the body and nurture these vital organs goes a long way in prevention, and also has immediate effects such as greater energy, clearer skin, better digestion, mental clarity and so much more.

So how can you start detoxing?

  1. Juicing raw vegetables and fruits is a perfect place to start – Juicing is beneficial because the most nutritional part of the plant is separated from the indigestible fiber. Juicing provide concentrated nutrients, including valuable antioxidants that prevent free radical damage, which is a major contributor of cellular degeneration. Some people go on a 7-day to 30-day juice fast. I can’t because I have no plans of losing weight and I love my food too much, so I juice first thing every morning and drink my water with lemon. Lemon Juice is a good astringent that rids tissues of toxins. It also stimulates liver detoxification. Incorporate chlorophyll-rich foods such as wheat grass and barley grass, as well as herbal teas and sea plants such as nori. Coriander, and foods containing citric and Malic acid (grapes, oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits) as well as Selenium-rich foods (such as Brazil nuts, mushrooms and sunflower seeds). These have been shown to assist with the removal of heavy metal build up within the body.

  2. Herbal Detoxification – Herbs can help to rejuvenate damaged tissues, speed detoxification, and promote healing, but if you continue to pump poison into the body they will have little effect. Many herbs will work as detoxifiers and cleansers. I take herbs almost daily with a break on the seventh day so that I can give my system a break. Herbs such as Milk Thistle, Barberry, Cascara Sagrada, Mullein, Echinacea, Juniper berries, Garlic, Cayenne just to name a few. Don’t take all the herbs all at once, but spread them throughout the day, preferably before meals.

  3. Colon, Liver and Kidney Detox – These are very specific and I will write more about this in detail in my next article. And also talk about it on my Youtube Channel.

  4. Cleansing the Mind – Psychological cleansing and stress management are probably the most important steps towards achieving and maintaining good health. The mind has tremendous power over our physical health. How we perceive ourselves and our outlook in life affects our health – Exercise, Music, Play and Laughter, Relaxation, Visualization, Positive Mental Attitude, Love and Happiness plus Prayer helps.

  5. Heat Treatment – Steams and Sauna – Why it works? – Heat stimulates the production rate of white blood cells, which increases the generation of antibodies and interferon (a group of proteins that attack viruses and which also have powerful anticancer properties), increased metabolism, increased circulation and detoxifier.

  6. Exercising – This is one of the best natural detoxifiers available. Exercise is just as important as a good diet. It can also enhance the cleansing effects of any detoxification program. Exercise should be regular Aerobic (jogging, running, basketball, dance aerobics) and Nonaerobic exercise (weightlifting) you must choose what works best for you but combining the two is amazing. I have one day of cardio and 3 days of weights, which works very well for me. Exercising MUST be part of your lifestyle.

  7. Oxygen Therapy – although many people are unfamiliar with oxygen therapy it is not new. There are numerous different types of therapies utilizing oxygen in various forms to promote healing. Some are very simple they can be self administered such as the use of hydrogen peroxide taken orally, through inhalation, rectally, vaginally or by absorption through the skin. Other methods require qualified health care professionals where an oxygen solution is given by injection or where blood is drawn out mixed with ozone or oxygen and recirculated into the bloodstream (autohemotherapy)

So there you have it! Detoxing is not as confusing or restrictive as you may have thought. So start where you can. By assisting your body's natural detoxification system to do its job, chances are a little boost of self-care will be a relaxing and enjoyable experience for you! Plus, the benefits of feeling amazing afterwards make it all so worthwhile.

Juicing and Exercise are two easy ways to start detoxing. All you need is to invest in a juicer and join a gym or workout from home or start running/jogging in the morning. Just be active.

Detox is your opportunity to give your body a break and allow your own self-cleansing and self-healing processes to kick into gear. Our bodies are innately intelligent and a period of cleansing is the perfect way to hit the reset button and start on a path to a healthier, happier, more vibrant you!

Cheers to taking control of your life!
